The second wave of the pandemic has now seen a steady drop in daily caseload for three straight days across the country and is now the lowest in 61 days

With a little over 100,000 new infections across India on Monday, daily cases in the country dropped to the lowest seen in over two months, underlining the country’s turnaround after the brutal second wave of the viral outbreak.

The seven-day average of new infections in the country – which denotes a region’s Covid-19 curve – had touched a peak of 391,819 cases a day on May 9, but has now dropped to 123,232 cases a day in the past week, a drop of over 68% from the peak.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 5 pm today.

Tamil Nadu Monday extended the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown till June 14 with some relaxations, news agency ANI reported. Standalone shops selling fruits and vegetables, grocery, meat & fish, roadside shops, flower shops can operate between 6 am-5 pm. 11 districts have been exempted from relaxations due to high infection rate.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the government is starting a ‘Jahan Vote, Wahan Vaccination’ campaign from today where people will be asked to get vaccinated at their designated polling stations. “We are starting a ‘Jahan Vote, Wahan Vaccination’ campaign from today. Under this campaign, we will tell people to visit their designated polling stations to get vaccinated. Door-to-door vaccination to be done soon. In 4 weeks, all above 45 years of age to be vaccinated.”

The total number of coronavirus cases has now reached 2,89,09,975 while the death toll rose to 3,49,186. There are 14,01,609 active cases in the country while as many as 2,71,59,180 people have recovered from the disease. The ministry said a total of 23,27,86,482 people have been vaccinated so far.
