A 16-year-old woman fabricated her own abduction after fleeing Kolkata with her 6-year-old sister because she was frightened to face her parents after receiving low marks on her Class 10 test.
The youngster attempted to extort money from her father by demanding Rs 1 crore in ransom in addition to staging her own kidnapping.
The girl herself messaged her father, demanding Rs 1 crore to release his daughters.
Results for the Class 10 Madhyamik examination were released by the West Bengal Board of Higher Secondary Education on Friday. The girl, who lives in south Kolkata's Bansdroni neighbourhood, had also registered for the exam.
She and her 6-year-old sister left their home after the results were announced to go to a cybercafe to download their grade reports. Her parents attempted to call her on the phone after she wasn't back for a while, but the police said that she was unreachable.
A missing complaint was filed with the police based on which an investigation was launched.
In the meantime, the parents received a text message informing them that their children had been abducted and that Rs 1 million was required to secure their quick release. They were also instructed to bring the money to the Nepalganj neighbourhood.
