On Thursday night, a 23-year-old guy was fatally hacked by an unnamed group of 4-5 men in Surathkal, which is on the fringes of Mangaluru district in Karnataka. The incident was caught on CCTV outside a clothing store. Following the incident, prohibitory measures under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were implemented in Suratkal that forbade large assemblies.
"Mohammed Fazil, age 23, was violently attacked by 4-5 individuals near Surathkal's Krishnapura Katipalla road at around 8 o'clock on July 28. He was transported to a hospital right away and pronounced dead "N Shashi Kumar, the police commissioner for Mangaluru, said.
"He was attacked with a lethal weapon by a group of youths. A case has been filed at Surathkal PS. Section 144 CrPC has been imposed at Surathkal, Mulki, Bajpe, Panambur," he added. "We are taking up a complaint of an eyewitness who was with the deceased during the incident and a case of murder in Surathkal PS. Keeping in view the sensitivity of the situation in important areas under Mangaluru city commissionerate, we've imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144," said Kumar.
The Muslim leaders were also asked by the police to pray at their residences. "On July 29, all wineries inside the commissionerate's boundaries will be shuttered. In the sake of maintaining local law and order, we have asked all Muslim leaders to offer their prayers at home. The right justice will be served promptly and fairly."
Urging citizens not to believe in any kind of rumours being spread by any group, the Police Commissioner said, "The motive behind the incident & the identity of the culprits is being investigated... I appeal to all the citizens to not succumb to any rumours being spread by vested-interest groups."
