SC issues notice to Centre, Gujarat over release of Bilkis Bano's rapists

The Gujarat government's decision to award remission to 11 of the defendants in the Bilkis Bano gang rape case is being contested in petitions before the Supreme Court

Regarding the release of the 11 inmates from the Bilkis Bano gang rape-murder case, the Supreme Court has sent letters to the federal government and the Gujarat government.

The Gujarat government's decision to award remission to 11 of the defendants in the Bilkis Bano gang rape case is being contested in petitions before the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided to take into account the appeals submitted by women's rights advocates, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, and CPI (M) Politburo member Subhashini Ali.

The Supreme Court stated that before pardoning the defendants in the Bilkis Bano gang rape-murder case, it had to determine whether there had been the application of mind.

Justice Rastogi stated after hearing the petitions, "Whatever offences were committed, they were convicted. It is to be determined whether they were properly given credit under the applicable programme.

The CJI said, “It is being said that the Supreme Court has granted permission for the release of convicts when the court had directed that only the application can be filed.”
