India registered a record 95,735 coronavirus cases in 24 hours taking the total number of infections to over 44.65 lakh, government data showed today. The country also recorded the highest deaths in a day with 1,172 fatalities. The last recorded highest spike was on Tuesday when India registered 90,802 cases. The highest deaths were recorded a day later with 1,133 fatalities.
There have been 72,939 recoveries in the last 24 hours - total recoveries stand at 34,71,783. There are over 9.19 lakh active cases in India, which is the second most affected nation due to the deadly virus in the world.
Meanwhile, in a bid to counter the spread of coronavirus in the country, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has stepped up the number of tests. "The total number of samples tested up to September 9 is 5,29,34,433 including 11,29,756 samples tested yesterday," said the ICMR.
Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected state in the country with 9.67 lakh cases of novel coronavirus. On Wednesday, the state reported 23,816 new cases. There are 2,52,734 active cases in Maharashtra which has recorded 6,86,462 recoveries and 27,787 fatalities, the State Health Department said in a bulletin.
In Andhra Pradesh, the COVID-19 count stands at 5,27,512 with 97,271 active cases, 4,25,607 recoveries and 4,634 fatalities. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded the highest single-day spike of 4,039 COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of infected individuals to 2,01,174, the state Health Department said in a bulletin.
