Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesperson, has filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking for the clubbing and transfer of the numerous FIRs that have been filed against her in various states. The appeal will be heard by a special bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala.
The case was originally scheduled for hearing on August 10, but it wasn't on the cause list the Supreme Court Registry published the night before. The matter is scheduled for hearing at 3:30 PM today, according to an amended list that was made public in the afternoon on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court had earlier come down heavily upon Nupur Sharma for her remarks made on a TV news channel which resulted in scathing global criticism. Major repercussions were witnessed even on the ground in the form of large-scale protests and violence that broke out in several parts of the country.
The bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice JB Pardiwala had put the onus of the violence on Sharma, stating that she was "single-handedly responsible for the country burning". At a later hearing, the same bench had agreed to give her interim protection from arrest and had directed that no coercive action be taken against her till August 10. The matter will be heard further today at 3:30 pm.
