Praveen Sood appointed as new CBI Director

Sources said the names of Sood, Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Kumar Saxena and Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards Director General Taj Hassan were cleared by the panel

Praveen Sood, the director general of police for Karnataka, was appointed to lead the CBI on Sunday. He will succeed current director SS Jaiswal.

After three candidates were narrowed down for the position by a powerful committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the position was filled the next day.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet chose Sood for the top position in the CBI, the nation's leading investigative organisation, based on this.

According to a directive from the Department of Personnel and Training, Sood, an officer from the Karnataka cadre and a member of the 1986 batch, will succeed Jaiswal, who will retire on May 25. The appointment will last for two years beginning on the day the new officer takes up the position.

A CBI Director has a fixed tenure of two years, which can be extended up to five years.

The three member panel which included Sood's name comprised of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has submitted a note of dissent citing procedural flaws.

Sources said the names of Sood, Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Kumar Saxena and Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards Director General Taj Hassan were cleared by the panel.
