Looking at the tableau on TV, newspapers and social media, it seems that Jio is everywhere. But the data says something else. Statistics say that Airtel is still essential today like any good friend. The numbers for December say that whether it is active users or gross users or inactive users, Airtel has beaten Jio in every case.
Let’s have a look at the numbers
Bharti Airtel continued to deliver strong growth in new subscriber acquisition, adding 5.5 million new subscribers in December 2020, as compared to 3.2 million additions by Reliance Jio. This is its highest number in the last 14 months – and with this, it has become the top telco by market share in terms of active subscribers, edging out Reliance Jio by the barest of margins.
Airtel’s strong showing in the second half of calendar year 2020 has helped it maintain an upward trajectory in terms of market share. While Airtel added over 22 million shares between July to December 2020, Jio managed to add only a little over 11 million.
Market share (wireless subscribers)
According to TRAI data, Airtel's market share was 27.96 percent in July, which increased to 29.36% in December. At the same time, Jio's market share was 35.03 percent in July, which increased to 35.43% in December. Here too, if we talk about the growth rate, Airtel has increased faster.
Airtel's tune set before the Farmers’ movement
Airtel has been at the top in terms of adding new subscribers till December 2020 for the fifth consecutive month. The farmers’ movement is told to be the reason behind the loss of Jio, but the actual figures tell the other story. It’s not that Airtel has made an edge over Jio in November or December. According to TRAI's data, Jio has been overshadowed by Airtel in the Net Subscriber addition for the last five months. Airtel has also taken the lead in adding 4G users.
The main reason behind the loss of Jio
The biggest reason behind the loss of Reliance Jio is its call drop problem and free offers. Earlier Jio had given many attractive offers to the consumer, due to which there was a sudden record increase in its users, but later it started to fall heavily on the users' pockets. With this, users started leaving Reliance Jio. At the same time, call drop is also one of the problems of Jio. Talking about the network, people trust Airtel more than Jio.
