Akshay Kumar apologised to fans in a statement issued on social media after he was trolled by several sections of the internet for endorsing a tobacco brand. In the post issued on April 21, Akshay said that he has “stepped back” from further promoting the brand and “will not endorse tobacco.” Twitter, though, was impressed but most users, as is the norm often, reacted with memes.
The actor took to social media to issue a statement. In the statement, Akshay Kumar said that he would no longer be associated with Vimal Elaichi and decided to contribute the entire endorsement fee towards a worthy cause.
"I am sorry. I would like to apologise to you, all my fans and well-wishers. Your reaction over the past few days has deeply affected me. While I have not and will not endorse tobacco, I respect the outpouring of your feelings in light of my association with Vimal Elaichi. With all humility, I step back," Akshay Kumar wrote.
"I have decided to contribute the entire endorsement fee towards a worthy cause. The brand might continue airing the ads till the legal duration of the contract that is binding upon me, but I promise to be extremely mindful in making my future choices. In return I shall forever continue to ask for your love and wishes," he added.
It all started when the megastar appeared in an ad along with Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan so as to promote a product owned by a tobacco brand. Fans were disappointed with Akshay for endorsing a cardamom product that is essentially owned by the tobacco brand, since he often encourages fans to follow a healthy lifestyle.
