No birthday wishes from PM Modi to UP CM Yogi spark rumours

Sources in the Prime Minister's Office, however, pointed out PM Modi had, in fact, spoken to Yogi Adityanath on the phone on Saturday and wished him on his birthday

Is all well between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath? Speculations ran rife on Twitter, after a radio silence from PM Modi’s twitter handle on the occasion of UP CM’s birthday on Saturday, June 5.

Sources in the Prime Minister's Office, however, pointed out PM Modi had, in fact, spoken to Yogi Adityanath on the phone on Saturday and wished him on his birthday.

They said he has not tweeted to anyone in the second wave of the pandemic and also provided a list of top leaders, including those from the opposition, for whom he skipped Twitter wishes over the past few weeks.

The list includes the chief ministers of Kerala, Rajasthan, Haryana and Goa.

The buzz this week was that the BJP's top leaders were worried about criticism of the Yogi Adityanath government's handling of the Covid pandemic.

Rumours suggested changes being considered - ahead of a critical election next year, one that could set the tone for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls - included either replacing him or his two deputies.

Looking through PM Modi’s Twitter handle, one can see he did not wish Yogi on his birthday on June 5, just like he did not tweet greetings to Goa CM Pramod Sawant on April 24. Similarly, on May 3, there were no birthday messages posted for Jharkhand leader Arjun Munda and Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot. The prime minister also didn’t greet Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar on May 5, cabinet minister Thawar Chand Gehlot on May 18, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan on May 24, and highway and transport minister Nitin Gadkari on May 27.
