Social activist Anna Hazare has been nominated for the prestigious 'Gandhi Mandela Award', which will be held later this year, alongside other distinguished persons/organizations.
Anna, who led movements to promote rural development, increase government transparency, and investigate and punish corruption in public life was nominated for his exemplary work in the field of social welfare. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan—the third-highest civilian award—by the Government of India in 1992.
The Gandhi Mandela awards will be given to personalities who have made significant contribution in the fields of Peace, Social Welfare, Culture, Environment, Education, Healthcare, Sports and Innovation.
In 2011, Hazare participated in the satyagraha movement campaigning for the passing a stronger anti-corruption Lokpal (ombudsman) bill in the Indian parliament.
