BJP announced a list of 38 nominees for the assembly by-elections to be held in several states on October 21. Former Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor was on Sunday named by the BJP as its candidates for bypolls in Gujarat. Alpesh will contest from Radhanpur, a seat he had won in 2017 on Congress ticket. The central election committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party finalised the names.
Another former Congress leader Dhavalsinh Zala, who had quit the Gujarat assembly and rebelled against the party, complaining of "unfair treatment", will contest from Bayad on BJP ticket.
Alpesh, who is a prominent OBC leader, gained immense popularity after he launched a protest to counter the Patidar reservation flurry of 2015. Of the 38 assembly seats, 10 are in Uttar Pradesh, six in Gujarat, five in Kerala, four in Assam, two each in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Sikkim and one each in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan and Telangana.
