During a demonstration organised by members of the Banjara and Bhovi groups in Shivamogga district on Monday against the internal reservation for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) announced by the state government, stones were thrown at former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's home and office.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been imposed in Shikaripura town after protesters pelted stones, injuring police officers.
Officers dispersed the numerous protesters, including women, by using batons. According to the news agency PTI, some members of the Banjara community, sometimes referred to as Lamani or Lambani, suffered injuries.
The SC reservations in the state have greatly benefited the Banjara community. However, the BJP government, led by Basavaraj Bommai, has announced that the Banjara community's percentage of reservations would be reduced.
According to the Sadashiva Commission findings, the government proclaimed internal reservations and assigned specific quotas to several subcastes within the SC group. The Banjara community was included in the "Scheduled Caste-Touchables," according to the demonstrators, who claimed that they received less reservation.
The latest move by the Bommai government grants SC (right) 5.5%, SC (left) 6%, and Touchables 4.5% reservations. This move has severely impacted the Banjara community, which earlier received a large share of the 17% SC reservation.
