The entry of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the sister of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, has added a new facet to national politics. While the supporters of the grand old party will see this as a game-changer, the Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to dub this as a desperate attempt by its adversary to strengthen itself and perpetuate the dynasty.
“Honorable Congress president has appointed Shrimati Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on first week of February 2019,” the Congress said in a press release signed by Ashok Gehlot. Being the party’s general secretary in charge of the eastern Uttar Pradesh means that she would be taking on the ruling BJP’s two mightiest leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who represents Varanasi in the Lok Sabha, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose hometown Gorakhpur in the eastern part of the state.
Many see former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s reflection in her granddaughter, the 47-year-old Priyanka—in looks, mannerism, and the ability to connect. Several people in the Congress find her a better leader than Rahul, even though she never ventured outside Amethi and Raebareli, the constituencies of her brother Rahul and mother Sonia Gandhi, respectively. While Rahul was tentative, diffident, and often muddled in the earlier years in politics, Priyanka has never been found awkward or nonplussed so far.
This is said to be the reason that the Congress top brass decided to strengthen the forces in UP, the country’s largest state that sends 80 members to the Lower House. This is also the state, dominated by the GOP for decades after Independence, the party’s presence is not very good, dominated as it is by the BJP, the SP, and the BSP.
The BJP has tried to dismiss the Congress announcement as its inability to see beyond the dynasty. “Rahul Gandhi failed, so they need Priyanka as a crutch. Can’t they find anyone beyond that family?” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters.

Be it as it may, nobody can deny that her entry will be X factor of Indian politics.
