A CBI investigation has been approved by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs into the Sonali Phogat death case. Earlier, a letter had been written by Goa CM Pramod Sawant to the Home Minister proposing that the investigation of Sonali Phogat’s death be done by the CBI.

Phogat passed away in Goa in August for an unexplained reason. On August 23, she was brought dead to St Anthony Hospital in Anjuna, North Goa district from her hotel. Initially, doctors had stated that she appeared to have died of a heart attack. However, "several blunt force injuries" were found on her body during the autopsy.

On Sunday, Sonali Phogat’s family called on Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and sought a probe by the central agency as they were not satisfied with the investigation done by the Goa police.

Later, Khattar claimed that he had requested a CBI investigation in writing, but they had responded that Goa would first complete their investigation and that the case would then be turned over to the CBI if the family requested additional inquiry.

"We completely trust Goa police, but due to the demand of Sonali Phogat's daughter, I have recommended a CBI probe," Goa CM Pramod Sawant said.

"Goa Police received many good clues in the case, and Sonali Phogat's daughter and family demanded a CBI probe into the matter. I have also received requests from many people. I will write a letter to the Home Minister to hand over the case to the central agency," he said.
