Cyclone Yaas has crossed the north Odisha coast, south of Balasore, and will reach Jharkhand tomorrow morning. The very severe cyclonic storm, which caused heavy to extremely heavy rain in Odisha over the past 24 hours, has now weakened into a severe cyclonic storm. North Odisha and coastal Odisha are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rain today.

The cyclone made landfall north of Dhamra and south of Bahanaga, close to Bahanaga block, on the coast, around 50 km of Balasore.

In view of the storm, the coastal states of West Bengal and Odisha carried out a mass evacuation drive and shifted over 12 lakh people to safe shelters by late evening.

The MeT department has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.

The India Meteorological Department said today afternoon that the very severe cyclonic storm Yaas has weakened into a severe cyclonic storm and it lay centred over north coastal Odisha, about 15 km west-southwest of Balasore.
