Justice D Y Chandrachud takes oath as 50th Chief Justice of India

Over all these years, Justice Chandrachud, who will be at the helm of affairs at the Supreme Court during crucial events in the future, has been known as someone who always speaks his mind by some and ‘the liberals’ favourite and a progressive judge by others

After serving as a Supreme Court judge for more than six years, Justice DY Chandrachud took the oath of office on Wednesday to become the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will serve on the Supreme Court for two years.

Former Chief Justice YV Chandrachud was his father. The only father-son team in the history of the nation's judiciary to hold the position of Chief Justice of India is Justice Chandrachud and his father.

Over all these years, Justice Chandrachud, who will be at the helm of affairs at the Supreme Court during crucial events in the future, has been known as someone who always speaks his mind by some and ‘the liberals’ favourite and a progressive judge by others.

The nation now has its 50th Chief Justice of India, a man with the bravery of his convictions and a fierce dedication to the supremacy of citizens' fundamental rights, a quality that has been evident in his rulings.

With several dissenting opinions, well-crafted judgments, and inspiring and empathetic observations, Justice Chandrachud has, through his judgments, made observations on crucial issues of fundamental rights, privacy, gender sensitisation, and rights of women and LGBTQ+, amongst others.
