Bharat Ratna to Pranab, Bhupen Hazarika and Nanaji Deshmukh

For the first time, more than two people have received Bharat Ratna

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the Bharat Ratna conferred on former President Pranab Mukherjee is a fitting recognition for his service to the nation.

Pranab Mukherjee - former President and a life-long Congressman respected across party lines -- has received the country's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, from his successor President Ram Nath Kovind. Two others received the award posthumously -- iconic singer Bhupen Hazarika and Nanaji Deshmukh, one of the founding members of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, which later evolved into the BJP.

"Dear Pranab Mukherjee, It was an honour to witness you receiving the Bharat Ratna, a fitting recognition of everything that you have done for the nation. Thank you for leaving no stone unturned towards making India more developed," Modi tweeted.

It is learned that Rahul was invited for the function by Rashtrapati Bhavan. However, the reason as to why he skipped the ceremony is yet to be known.
