His holiness Dalai Lama has been nominated for the prestigious Gandhi Mandela Award 2020. A jury of five chief justices from three countries has nominated him for his outstanding contribution in World Peace. The Dalai Lama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his nonviolent campaign to end the Chinese domination of Tibet. The 14th Dalai Lama was born as Tenzin Gyatso in Tsinghai Province, China, in 1935. His peace initiatives include:
1. Transformation of the whole of Tibet into a zone of peace
2. Abandonment of China's population transfer policy that threatens the very existence of the Tibetans as a people
3. Respect for the Tibetan people's fundamental human rights and democratic freedoms
4. Restoration and protection of Tibet's natural environment and the abandonment of China's use of Tibet for the production of nuclear weapons and dumping of nuclear waste
5. Commencement of earnest negotiations on the future status of Tibet and of relations between the Tibetan and Chinese peoples
The Gandhi Mandela Foundation is an initiative of the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy (a Govt. of India-recognized 80G, 12A, 8A-compliant), which is based in New Delhi. The Foundation instituted the Gandhi Mandela Awards during the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhiji to celebrate those who have carried forward the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. The Chairman of the Foundation is India’s Hindu spiritual leader Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj (President of Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha, a Board Member of World Council of Religious Leaders). The Jury committee includes Chairman Justice K.G. Balakrishna (former Chief Justice & former Chairman NHRC), Vice-Chairman Justice Dipak Misra (former Chief Justice India), Justice Gyan Sudha Misra (former Supreme Court Judge, India), Justice Kedarnath Upadhyay (former Chief Justice of Nepal and former Chairman NHRC, Nepal), and Justice Tafazzul Islam (former Chief Justice of Bangladesh).
IFIE has previously organized the Champions of Change Awards, an Indian award program for promoting Gandhian values, (Swachata), community service and social development including Indian Aspirational district selected by top constitutional jury members headed by justice K. G. Balakrishnan (Former Chief Justice of India and Former Chairman NHRC). Some of the awardees include Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sisodia and MOS Finance & Corporate Affairs Anurag Thakur.
The Gandhi Mandela Award 2020 is the organization’s first International Award, which will be presented to the Internationally acclaimed personalities for their outstanding contribution in promoting individual freedom, civil liberties and human rights across the globe. The awards will be the first step in making India’s presence globally and this will serve as just the beginning of many more to follow.
