CWG2022: Punam Yadav fails to clinch medal in 76 Kg weightlifting

The 27-year-old struggled to lift 95 kg in the snatch round on her first try, but she succeeded on her second effort with the same weight. She then lifted 98 kilogrammes to place herself in a powerful position

Punam Yadav's Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign ended in sadness as the two-time medallist failed to record a single lift in the clean and jerk round and bowed out of the women's 76kg weightlifting final on Tuesday, August 2.

The 27-year-old struggled to lift 95 kg in the snatch round on her first try, but she succeeded on her second effort with the same weight. She then lifted 98 kilogrammes to place herself in a powerful position.

Punam Yadav successfully lifted 98 kg in the snatch round, placing him in the silver medal position. She was the favourite to win her third medal at the Commonwealth Games despite only being 2 kg ahead of Canada's Maya Laylor.

Punam, however, was unable to perform the clean and jerk with 116 kg. While the Uttar Pradesh native, 27, performed the clean without incident, the jerk presented a challenge because she could feel movement in her elbows as she lifted the weight above her shoulders.

Punam's third try put her in a must-lift position, and she almost pulled it off, but she let go of the weight before the officials signalled the end of the round at the buzzer.

The challenge made by the Indian coaching staff against the referee's call was rejected.
