India has made history at the Tokyo Paralympics after winning 19 medals including 5 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 6 bronze medals. This in India’s best ever tally at the Paralympics.
Just before this, the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympic games had recorded its best ever tally of 7 medals including 1 gold medal courtesy Neeraj Chopra’s epic win at the Javelin throw event.
India had made its debut at the Paralympics in 1968 and since then had won 12 medals till 2016 games at Rio de Janeiro but in 2020 Paralympics itself India won 19 medals.
India won its first ever medal at Paralympics in 1972 with Murlikant Petkar winning Gold medal in swimming.
A lot was expected of India's largest contingent at the Paralympics -- a 54 strong unit -- and the para-athletes lived up to the hype, winning medals at will in Tokyo.
