Unlike Sachin and Kohli, Dhoni is loved all over India: Gavaskar

Right after the toss, Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar heaped rich praises on MS Dhoni, saying his popularity has surpassed that of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli

Fans went berserk on Saturday as their favourite MS Dhoni returned to professional cricket after a span of 437 days. The recently retired former Indian captain looked supremely fit as he was all smiles from the beginning of the proceedings. MS Dhoni started the match on a 'winning' note and won the toss to put Mumbai Indians to bat.

Dhoni was at his wittiest best and asked if the first slip will be allowed in the new coronavirus which follows social distancing ardently. Dhoni added that the lockdown period gave him enough time to concentrate on his fitness and that might be the reason he was looking fit. Not surprisingly, whole of India started showering love over MS Dhoni and he started trending across all the social media platforms

Right after the toss, Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar heaped rich praises on MS Dhoni, saying his popularity has surpassed that of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Gavaskar added that while Tendulkar and Kohli are popular in certain cities of India, MS Dhoni's stardom spreads throughout the stadium. The former captain reckoned that fans of Tendulkar and Kohli may disagree but electricity which Dhoni generates in the crowd is more.

"When he steps on to the field, the electricity he generates on the crowd is more. I know Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli's fans might disagree with me.

"Since MSD comes from Ranchi, which doesn't have a cricket culture as such, the whole India loves him. Sachin is more popular in Mumbai and Kolkata. Kohli is more popular in Delhi and Bangalore. MS Dhoni is loved all over India," Sunil Gavaskar said.

MS Dhoni made some master moves in the opener against Mumbai Indians on Saturday. He promoted Sam Curran ahead of him and rotated his bowlers superbly to beat the defending champions by 5 wickets.
