Oli was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs as part of the interim government of Girija Prasad Koirala in 2006.

Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, the current Prime Minister of Nepal has been nominated for the prestigious 'Gandhi Mandela Award', which will be held later this year, alongside other distinguished persons/organizations . Oli is also the Co-chairman of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) alongside Pushpa Kamal Dahal. 

Announcing the award on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Gandhi Mandela Foundation said that the award honors exemplary work and achievements of the Heads of State and Government and other distinguished persons/organizations around the world. These awards will be given to personalities who have made significant contribution in the fields of Peace, Social Welfare, Culture, Environment, Education, Healthcare, Sports and Innovation.

Oli was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs as part of the interim government of Girija Prasad Koirala in 2006. He began his political career in 1966 in opposition to the party-less Panchayat System in place at the time. Oli previously served as Prime Minister from 11 October 2015 to 3 August 2016 and was the first elected prime minister under the newly adopted Constitution of Nepal.
